As the proliferation of AI begins to transform our interaction patterns with technology (or resistance to them), it has become clear to me that, in my work in innovation for Mozilla, I need to shift my time horizon further into the future to look not at ‘How Will People Use the Browser’ to ‘What Will the Browser Become?’.
How will people access knowledge on the internet in 3-5 years? How will they interact with it? What does a healthy future relationship with technology look like, and how do we preserve our humanity, our relationships with each other, and our respect for the world around us, even as technology evolves and empowers us?
These and other questions led me to the work of several prominent thinkers in the space, among them Monika Bielskyte who has spent over 10 years developing the Protopia World Stack - a methodology for designing futures worth actually inhabiting. It consists of:
- Protopia Futures - Examines possible futures and asks “what kind of future is worth designing?”
- Embodied Futures asks:
- what does this future actually do to bodies, ecologies, and the conditions life depends on
- Asks which directions are scientifically grounded to guide decisions.
- Asks where the future breaks
- Storyworld Design
- Asks: can people recognize themselves inside this future, and feel inspired enough to take part?
- Helps cultural institutions develop worlds with enough internal coherence to shift what audiences believe can exist, rather than only what they fear or escape into.
Protopia Futures
Protopia Futures is organized around six principles, used to examine long term resiliency of the strategy, product, policy, or narrative before it is built:
- Structural Plurality — Design for the world as it actually is, not one fictional default.
- Systemic Interdependence — Nothing is isolated; consequences cascade.
- Regenerative Resilience — Repair the conditions life depends on.
- Joy Imperative — Lasting change needs desire, not just discipline.
- Creativity as Foresight — Imagination is the source code of transformation.
- Meaning and Belonging
Embodied Futures
Embodied Futures is organized around six filters, used to stress-test futures against lived reality rather than idealized personas:
- Body Frontier: Innovation must support, not undermine biology.
- Edge Intelligence: The edge detects reality before the centre does.
- Design With, Not For
- Sensory Cognition: Not merely what experience does, but how it is experienced.
- Play and Curiosity
- Life-Centric Design: Prototype for life in context, not isolated users.
Storyworld Design
Storyworld design is organized around six structural elements, used to translate strategic vision into culture and real-world deployment:
- Define the world. Must be legible to be impactful.
- Create Aesthetic Entry: People enter through attraction before they stay for meaning.
- Shift Expectation: Give audiences what they hoped for, not what they expected.
- Open Portals: World scales through medium-specific touchpoints.
- Invite Participation Over Spectatorship: Commitment grows through engagement.
- Loop Fiction and Reality w/ Feedback: The imagined and the implemented in a virtuous loop.
Quotes
Who defines the future
- The future should not be defined by those most insulated from the consequences of their actions.
- We must challenge the underlying model of futurity itself: what counts as intelligence, what counts as progress, what counts as relation, and who gets treated as fully real.
- The futures produced by institutional foresight have been shaped overwhelmingly by the Western assumptions (the WEIRD world - Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic), even as the demographic, urban, and ecological weight of the coming century sits increasingly across the Global Majority.
- Their inhabitants, knowledge traditions, and ecological realities have been treated as emerging market context rather than primary design terrain.
Proactive Prototyping
- The future is shaped not just by our actions, but also our apathy.
- The AI revolution is not happening to us as some pre-ordained destiny. It is being designed, funded, deployed, and governed – or not – by people. Every time that question gets answered with “technology is inevitable,” someone is getting away with something.
- [Practice] proactive prototyping: not adaptation to technological trajectories, but informed choices about futures worth moving toward.
- Layers of interpretation*:
- linguistic layer (where words become visual or auditory expressions),
- conceptual layer (how the AI interprets and combines ideas),
- aesthetic layer (how visual elements manifest/interact)
- emergent layer (dealing with unexpected combinations and results)
- meta layer (what the process reveals about human and machine creativity)
Automation doesn’t deepen judgment
- Machine learning does not correct weak judgement – it amplifies it.
- artificial intelligence [has no metric for] creativity, emotional intelligence, interpersonal judgment, adaptability under stress, or any of the capacities that actually determine whether a person or a community flourishes.
- interpretability tools could eventually be incorporated into training loops, giving future systems something more like the capacity to notice and question their own assumptions.*
Plurality, not purification
- systems do not thrive through purification – they thrive through variation, redundancy, adaptability, repair, and relationship.
- This is not a vision of the future. It is an escape fantasy from the human condition itself. Escape fantasies are structurally incapable of building anything durable – because they are organized around the elimination of the very complexity that makes systems resilient.
- Science gets better when it stops filtering reality for the convenience of the model.
- Intelligence(s) emerge from the spaces between systems, not within them.*
- Innovation occurs at the interface of different scales of understanding.*
Bodies and biology are the measure
- Intelligence is not logical – it is biological.
- “Brains develop – they are not assembled.”
- Biology is not a constraint on innovation. It is its most advanced technology — and the only true measure of whether innovation is working.
- A body is not a sealed unit. Design that treats the biosphere as backdrop begins from a faulty scientific model of what a human being actually is. Life-centric design repositions humans within the ecology they cannot be separated from.
- Digital technologies are not separate from nature but nature’s latest method of self-exploration.*
- Humans aren’t Earth’s masters but its sensory organs. Technology isn’t separate from nature; it is nature’s way of expanding the possibility of space.*
- embodied world models — AI systems embedded in ongoing environmental interaction rather than operating on a closed context window*
The edge sees first
- “Our senses give us this powerful illusion that we are experiencing all there is to perceive. But every animal can only tap into a small fraction of reality’s fullness.”
- Designing from edge conditions — from disability, neurodivergence, aging, ecological constraint — produces solutions that work better for everyone. the edge detects reality before the centre does.
- “What we practice at the small scale sets the pattern for the whole system.” – Adrienne Maree Brown
Algorithms compress imagination
- Algorithmic recommendation systems are not merely influencing what you see. They are making their move on the last unenclosed frontier: your imagination.
- While recommendation systems posture to reflect culture, they instead compress it. They take what has already accumulated reward and then feed it back at industrial scale until it begins to feel natural, inevitable, reflecting your existing preferences back at you with increasing intensity, progressively narrowing the range of perspectives and sources you encounter
- Much of what still passes for advanced future-thinking is inherited mythology with new software layers.
- The futures that were underfunded, underadapted, or never rendered visible at all do not simply remain marginal. They recede – first from the feed, then from shared reference, then from the realm of what people can easily imagine.
- Methods of evaluation are reality creation engines - metrics make worlds.*
- Imagine more pluralistic human-machine syntheses [with] bidirectional prompting*
- We need to [evolve] Interfaces for Understanding…contextual command palettes, “semantic zooming” to explore information across depths, incentivizing improvement in collaborative environments.*
What gets funded gets imagined
- The stories a culture funds become the stories its institutions absorb.
- imagineering organized around hope and plurality instead of despair and erasure can achieve commercial scale.
- The industry’s failure to fund more of them is a choice, not a verdict. Research infrastructure takes generations to build and can be destroyed in a single budget cycle.
- Marketing curricula still teach persuasion as craft, and manipulation as strategy, untrained to ask whether the desire they are engineering serves anyone. The result is a professional class that is technically accomplished and conceptually limited – trained to solve the problems the inherited brief already knows how to name, weak at recognizing the damage it defined as irrelevant.
Return Joy to Futurism
- Read the tonal register of legacy futurism and one thing becomes hard to miss: joy is absent.
- [Current] visual spectacle projects emotional deadness: technological sophistication advancing alongside ecological collapse, commercialized intimacy, and gendered disposability, all treated as atmosphere rather than emergency.
- If ideas have consequences, does the imagineering work bear none?
- You can’t preserve metabolised knowledge. You can only transmit it. If you are a steward of resources—time, money, space — the invitation is: shift from collection to companionship…[an innovation] that listens not for novelty, but for continuity.*
Worldbuilding is how people enter and futures are evaluated
- People adopt future trajectories as their own only when they can recognise themselves inside them
- Worldbuilding gives people a shared reality to enter, question, and develop from. It translates ideas into felt, visceral understanding. It reveals where the proposed future breaks its own logic or what of its elements, characters, narratives are ill-fit for the purpose.
- Business is the process of making investments big and small and expecting them to create more value than they cost. Tokens need to be held to the same standard. Return on Tokens = (Value of Output - Cost of Tokens)
